I am looking into this maker for a friend. He has recently seen a small 7\" blade open handle handsaw with Sykes stamped into the blade. Possibly William Sykes.

Can I get some info from someone regarding this maker?

    Thanks

    Hi Mark,

A quick check of Simon Barley\'s list of Sheffield sawmakers, shows the following

    William Sykes Isle 1786 - 1790
William Sykes Pye Bank 33 1821 1823 Willey Street
William Sykes Backfields 1898 Name possibly bought by Sanderson & Newbould

It may be possible to get a better identification with a picture, if you can get one. The style and design might indicate if is made by the
    Earlier (1790\'s) William Sykes.

William Sykes is a fairly common name, there are lot\'s of William Sykes, here just for the sake of interest
is the list of the William Sykes from 1911 Sheffield & Rotherham Directories.

John William SYKES Foreman fitter 190 Sutherland Road White\'s 1911
    Thomas William SYKES House furnisher 160 & 162 Gibraltar Street; h. 14 Crofton Avenue, Wadsley White\'s 1911
    William SYKES Confectioner (Sykes W. & E. ) h. 33 Whitehouse Road White\'s 1911
    William SYKES Electro-plate merchant (S. Bros. ) h. 191 Edmund Road White\'s 1911
Sgt. Major William SYKES H/Q 4th Battln. York & Lancaster Regmt.,Territorial Force St. John\'s Road, Park White\'s 1911
William SYKES Householder 413 Shoreham Street White\'s 1911
William SYKES Silver turner 36 Hunter House Road White\'s 1911
William SYKES Traveller 27 Botanical Road White\'s 1911
Rev. William SYKES Vicar of Hillsborough & Wadsley Bridge The Vicarage, 247 middlewood Road, Hillsborough White\'s 1911
William SYKES Warehouseman 88 Tasker Road White\'s 1911
    William T. SYKES Undertaker 146 Wentworth Street; h. 46 Upperthorpe Road White\'s 1911

I know this has nothing to do with your saw, but it illustrates just how common the name is.
Everyone from Sgt Major William Sykes, to The Rev William Sykes Vicar of Hillsborough & Wadsley Bridge. Even an undertaker William T Sykes.

    Regards
    Ray

I have better descriptoin of the saw and its maker
    Stamping on blade:
    William Sykes & Company
    AB
    Cast Steel

The label screw (medallion) has a crown and an eagle with shield and a possible unicorn as well.

It appears to be around an 8 point.

Any further info or comments would be appreciated.

    Hi,

Any chance of a picture. We are a little lost without one? And we may be not much use with one either:), but it would certainly help

    Hi,

I am not sure that this is a good place to actually sell saws, but it would still be nice to see images of them.

Now it is ironic that I am trying to teach someone to use the site but here goes.

After sign-in you will come to the "Saw Discussion Forums" page.
On this page and underneath the heading you will see 2 sub-headings
    "Site Related" and
    "Saw Related"

In the "SawRelated" heading there is:-
"Forum:Saw Identification and Discussion" (1st heading)
    Click on this
On the new page near the top there is a small box "New Thread"
Click on this, put in your header and then text.

When you have done this, below the "Submit Reply" and "Preview Post" boxes there is a category "Additional Options"

The second option down is "Attach Files" and within that box "Manage Attachments"
    Click on Manage Attachments.

A box will pop up with 6 "Browse" boxes.

Click on the first "browse" and the programme should take you to your picture files on your own computer. ( If it doesn't then I am lost).

Select your own required folder, and click to open the file that you want to put on, much like adding an e-mail attachment.

The name of the file should then be automatically displayed in the first "Browse" box

Continue until all 6 are filled if you have that many photo's.

Then click "upload". When this is done you can then close the box.

Believe me, if I can do it most people can.

There may be an easier way and if anyone knows it, please tell me as well!!!

    Fred
