    Hi Folks

I\'m new to this site but not new to woodworking. I picked up an 8\" W. Tyzack Sons & Turner dovetail saw off of ebay for 19.99. its my first saw restoration. I plan on using her for cutting dovetails and tenons. One thing I noticed is that the blade slot is not perfectly parallel to the handle. It is either intended to be that way or is a sign of poor craftsmenship. However, new to saw restoration I have no idea. All my other saws the blades are perfectly parallel with the handles.

the teeth are 20ppi. For Dovetails should I recut them as rip teeth and not crosscut?

Also, is this a nice saw or did I just blow $20!

    Thanks

    Hi Robert,

That will make a nice little dovetail saw, it might be a bit short
    for tenons.

If the handle isn\'t in line with the blade, that might be a problem,
can you post a picture showing the problem.

Dovetail saws are always sharpened rip.

    BTW $20 is a bargain!

    Regards Ray

    Hi Robert,

Outch...I see what you mean! that has the look of a manufacturing defect.

I think it might be time to start thinking about a new handle, there are
a number of good tutorials on handle making. (I still haven\'t got mine written up yet)

    Here are a few..

Leif Hansen (aka Norse Woodsmith) has a great article here.. http://www.norsewoodsmith.com/node/68
    Alice Frampton (aka Alf) http://www.leevalley.com/newsletters/Woodworking/1/5/article3.htm
    Tim Hoff http://www.cianperez.com/Wood/WoodDocs/Wood_How_To/INDEX_How_To_pages/TimHoff_MakingSawHandles.htm
    Phillsville http://www.philsville.co.uk/sawhandles.htm
Mike Wenzloff http://wenzloffandsons.com/saws/kits/index.html (there was another by Mike but I can\'t see it just now)
    Pedder http://www.woodworking.de/cgi-bin/forum/webbbs_config.pl/read/25286

In the one by Alice Frampton, she shows how to get an accurate center line by clamping a saw horizontally
    to the bench.

For the template, you can download one that you like from the gallery http://www.backsaw.net/cpg/thumbnails.php?album=7
Don\'t forget to resize it to suit your hand size.

Let me know how it goes, preferably with a few pictures.

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi Robert,

this is exactly the first saw I rehandled. B)

You\'ll have to be very carefully, when you
cut the slot for the blade because it is really thin.

Before rehandling I would cut some tests. The question is not if the saw is straight but if it cuts straight. (Wich is sometimes not the same thing.)

    BTW:

    Ray,

Sawmaker Tim Hoffman has now his own blog:

    http://www.sprucemill.blogspot.com/

There you\'ll find his articles about blade and handle making, too.

    Cheers

Wow, Ray, thanks for the resources. :woohoo: Well, I feel gipped by spending $20 for this saw but the new handles looks like a fun winter project.

I suspected that it was faulty and not some cool custom feature for leftys.

    Thanks again,

    Robert
