Hello everyone. I found a pair of backsaws that I did not recognize today and could not resist adding them to my budding collection. I did not do any cleaning so these photos of them are just as I found them. If any of you know anything about David Kimberley and Sons and specifically these backsaws, I would appreciate any information you may have. Thank you! Joe
Hi Joe, I found a David Kimberley and Sons Leopold St Birmingham listed as Plane Makers in 1875. Interestingly, nothing in W.L.Goodman. (2nd edition) Ah... here he is, in Birmingham in 1896-97 Listed in Pecks Not sure what other years might show up to try and establish a time line of sorts. Regards Ray
Ray, Kimberley is in Goodman 3rd edition. Shown as: David Kimberley 1854 - 1871> D Kimberley & Sons 1876 - 1899 D Kimberley & Sons Ltd 1900 - 1908 1909 taken over by Wynn & Timmins, but name continued until 1920s. No mention of saws. Cheers Peter
Thank you Ray and Peter for your responses. I spent time online searching for references to David Kimberley and Sons without finding much information. So far, I have found nothing in the Post Office Directory of Birmingham, with its Suburbs, for 1878 by Kelley. I did find mention of David Kimberley, plane manufacturer in two articles: http://www.leevalley.com/newsletters/Woodworking/3/1/patents2.htm http://www.htpaa.org.au/kimberley.php As Ray mentioned, Peck's lists David Kimberley and Sons several places: 1. on p. 295 (alphabetical list) 2. under manufactures, Adzes, Axes (also Highgate Tool Works) 3. under manufactures, Carpenter's and Joiner's Tools (also Highgate Tool Works) 4. under manufactures, Edge Tools and Saws (also Highgate Tool Works) 5. under manufactures, Horse Clippers (also Highgate Tool Works) 6. under manufactures, Planes (also Highgate Tool Works) 7. under manufactures, Rules (carpenters) (David Kimberley and Sons Limited, Highgate Tool Works) 8. under manufactures, Steel Toys (pliers, compasses, pincers, turnscrews) (David Kimberley and Sons Manufacturing Co. Limited, Highgate Street Works) 9. under manufactures-Tools-all kinds David Kimberley and Sons Limited (carpenter's and joiner's, Highgate Tool Works) These saws appear to have quite an elaborate etching (same design on each). Is there a safe and non-destructive way to make the etch appear more clearly? Thanks, Joe
