Hi guys, need some help with Identifying the following two saws please: The back saw looks like a Disston but I could be wrong. Sorry about the quality of the last two photos, I didn't take them.
The backsaw looks like a post 1918 Disston. What does the label screw say, and what is stamped on the spine? The other one has a Sheffield (?) label screw and a London pattern handle, you will have to look for stamping on the blade for ID. Toby
I have Taylor Bros Sheffield and Spear&Jackson Sheffield, with S and J either side of the crest ... but not on london-pattern handles. I could almost go with the S&J idea. Cheers, Paul
It's a batch of tools that the person is auctioning online so I unfortunately can't check for any markings. All the guy can tell me is that the backsaw is a Henry Disston & Sons of Philadelphia USA, I assume that's what it says on the spine..
ok finally got the seller to check, it says "warranted superior" on the medallion which doesn't really help much.
Huh. Well - shoulda seen that coming. I guess the medallion is upside down. I woulda put $10 of Toby's money on the 'Sheffield' reading. Then the fun with that saw will be in cleaning up the sawplate to try to find what makers stamp (probably) you can find. Depending on your personal leaning, I'd say a good buy at less than $20 (for the handsaw) ... losing its appeal at $30+ sight unseen. Then add in what you figure for the backsaw. Cheers, Paul
The label screw is something like these. Which is part Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom and part Sheffield Coat of Arms. With eight crossed arrows in the center. I call this a Sheffield label screw, which is not entirely accurate. Toby
