I bought this saw for its uncommon quality designation of "Premier", which I hadn't noticed on a saw before. Looks like a late 1800s saw to me. In researching, the first direct reference for Francis Newton, found using The Sheffield Indexers, is the following entry for 1841; Newton, Francis (, mrcht. & mfr. Of table, pen, pocket, gardeners' shoe and butcher' knvs. Rzrs & scsors., blstr. Shr. Sprg. & cast steel). Address: Portobello wks. 129 Portobello s. h Glossop r., in 1841. Recorded in: Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory - 1841. [I am ignoring an earlier 1833 Francis Newton "Merchant" listing, at a different address] there are several more Portobello St entries for the 1840s, then nothing shows on The Sheffield Indexers until 1905, when "Francis Newton & Son", is still at the Portobello Works My saw seems unremarkable apart from its "Premier" designation, with a chipped handle and quite a few broken teeth. But those negative factors made the price low enough for my fiscally responsible (cheap) saw collecting philosophy.
