Dear all, I thought I'd share this recent find with you, a maker that is usually associated with chisels as opposed to saws. A Charles Taylor's "Screw Brand" 8" Saw, 13PPI cross cut saw, quite a steep rake angle. The two tiny split nut screws were replaced when the saw was cleaned up. It has a usable blade depth of 2.25" / 60mm, couldn't find them in BSSM, so I thought I'd post it for reference. Thanks... Mari
Hi again, I googled Charles Taylor and got the following from a post on Swingleydev. 188900 Anthony Seo <tonyseo@p...> 2009‑02‑26 RE: Re: Toledo and Charles Taylor Chisels At 09:21 PM 2/25/2009, Steve Sullivan wrote: >Tony wrote: > >" Charles Taylor was an edge tool maker working at 47 Eyre Lane in >Sheffield. It is very possible that he was bought out by another firm who continued to use the name. That might account for the relatively short working dates. Was a very common practice in England. Tony The saw looks about the right date, if not a little later than the dates mentioned above. Fred
Hi Fred, thank you for your reply, I've had quite a few chisels by Charles Taylor's "Screw Brand" mainly registerd firmers & sash mortise chisels. I would be surprised if they only traded for that long, as there seem to be quite a few of their chisels around at least, this is the first saw of theirs I've found. Regards Mari
Hi Mari, Just so that you know you are not alone, here is another offering from Ebay. This one looks like it has an etch although not very well preserved. Here is the link while it lasts. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111846204831?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT Fred
Hi Fred, thanks for posting that link & photos. Looking at the two saws they definitely look like 3rd or 4th quality lines, & probably factored by one of the bigger players. I've never seen one of their saws before the little one that I posted & now you've dug up a brass back one... Regards Mari
