On researching my latest acquisition, one of the first things that came up was the discussion topic on this site re \"still making saws in Sheffield\", but this is predominantly about modern saws, which mine is definitly not.

Again, me being me and my budget failing to stretch to buying a quality example, I bought this rather down-at-heel specemin. It needs a sharpen and set [sounds like a visit to the hairdresser (cf. shampoo and set, or is this a purely British concept)], and the blade unfortunately has a kink in it. (What is the mechanism by which you put a kink in a backsaw blade - it sounds like a virtual impossibility to me, but it has happened to this one).

Anyway, if you go to my gallery you will see that the saw is steel backed with a rather cute but cross looking lynx on the medallion. It is 16\" along its cutting edge, 43/4 inches wide with 11 or 111/2 points per inch.

It still has split nuts. I read somewhere (possibly on this site or one linked to it) that split nuts were phased out later in Britain than in America where they virtually disappeared overnight with the introduction of the closed nut. Has anyone any knowledge of when they were superceeded on British saws, as this hopefully helps with dating.

    Hi Fred,

sorry, I can\'t add any value to the dating, but I think it would be easier to discuss your saws, if you give a link or post the pictures here.

To kink a 0,8mm sawblade wich was used usually in these saws you need brut force. I only hade on blade with a kink. I think a hammer fell on it.

    Cheers

    Hello Pedder,

I am sorry to mess you around with the photographs and I know that it is a lot harder to jump from the \"discussion\" to the gallery than to look at pictures in the text, but I really am working to my technological limits just getting the pictures on the website. ( It once took me about 6 go\'s before I got it right ). To get them into the text is a level of ability too far for me. I am also aware that my \"discussion\" is nearly always merely an adjunct to the photos themselves. They are the important (and I hope - informative) things, not normally what I have to say about them.

So please bear with me on this one. If a miracle happens and I manage to do it, then so be it, but I wouldn\'t hold my breath waiting.

Hope you will bear with me,

    Fred.

    Hi Fred,

I really would like to tell how to do, because it is quite simple, but I\'m not sure if my English is good enough. Let\'s try.

To create a link in the pictures in a post you need to work with two windows of your browser. The first shows your gallery, the second the forum page to write a new post. Now copy the url in the adress field of the first picture (something like http://backsaw.net/....). Go to the second window and paste the adress in your text.
