    Hello folks.

Picked up a little backsaw yesterday. 1950s-60s? Closed handle. Handle looks vaguely like meranti. Three saw nuts. Stamp in back M-----n(?) Products Sydney and a pair of crossed swords a bit like the Wilkinson Sword logo but with swords point down.

Ring any bells? My apologies for not being able to post photos right now.

    Cheers,
    Virg.

    Hi Virgil,

I don't think there has been enough research done on Australian made saws,

My list is as follows (mostly culled from the HTPAA data base)

    Australian Hand Saw Makers.

BLAKELEY ( WH Blakeley Knife and Saw Co.)
    DISSTON ( Henry Disston )
DANARM ( Danarm Pty Ltd )
KING SAW (King Saw Manfrs Pty Ltd)
    MARSDEN (Lysaght Works)
    PORTER (see Disston)
RIVER LETT ( Aus Govt Lithgow Small Arms)
    SKIPPER SAW (Skipper Saw Co)
    SAWMASTER (Nelson & Co.)
T-CUT SUPER SAW ( E&F Stanley Pty Ltd)
    WELLAND VALE ( unknown)

My guess is that yours would be a Marsden, made in the Lysaght works in Sydney, they branched out into tools and such, in the 1950's

I'm guessing, but probably they were looking for products to make after the armaments manufacturing ramped down at the end of the war, The Government Lithgow Small Arms factory I think did much the same..

Which reminds me... I'm still looking for a RIVER LETT backsaw.. :)

    Regards
    Ray

PS.. I'd love to see a picture.

    Thanks Ray.

I had a look at the HTPAA site earlier today and saw the Marsden reference, but I thought it was worth checking with those with more saw knowledge than myself.

If I can pull thumb from bum I'll see if I can send a photo tomorrow.

    Cheerio,
    Virg.
