Greetings all. I have a small backsaw that I have had for some time. I would be grateful if anyone can shed light on its origins or some history of the maker. Thank you all in anticipation. SG Title rectified.
I think that is Dundee. As I understand sawmakers were very rare in Scotland, I am guessing Ross is a merchant
Ahh, I even searched google maps for Lundee - DOH! Dundee - of course! Well, that's a start. Cheers SG
WSRoss That's a lovely little saw! I spent the best part of a week last year in the main library in Glasgow - marvellous place - and found all the Scottish names that appear on saws, I think. There were indeed very few who made their own, and very many who retailed them. (Incidentally, I came across the term saw trimmer as an occupation fairly frequently in the trades directories, but I've not seen it elsewhere and presume it is a Scottish usage only). These are his dates; I would guess this saw is in the earlier part of his working life. I think the term saw maker is the common cover-up for saw doctor, repairer, dealer etc. ROSS, William Sim DUNDEE 132 Seagate 1907-1911 8 (8A) (8B) King Street 1912-1932 ABERDEEN 12 Carmelite Lane 1932-1935 Saw maker and cutler; the Dundee premises were used by Harry Johnston and Joseph Jupp both before and during the same period as Ross.
