I attach some pictures of 5 saws that I got amongst a lot of tools purchased at an auction recently. If you go to my gallery, on the picture of the five saws they are, from right to left two Robert Sorbys, two Henry Disstons and a Taylor brothers.
On the blades of the smaller Disston and and the Taylor, there are etchings. I cannot make out exactly what is written on the Disston but so far I have deciphered \"For Beauty Finish and ????ity this Saw cannot be E???led\". Can someone fill in the gaps for me. ( the number of question marks may not reflect the number of letters that I cannot decipher.
The etching on the Taylor Brothers is reasonably clear, but the only information that I can get off the internet re it is that there is no record of Mowbray being a line of saws, despite mowbray saws being referred to on other sites. Can anyone help with this as well as indications as to age. It looks like this saw is newer than the rest, with the rivets possible being chrome or other plate.
    Hope someone can help. Fred

    Hi Fred,

Welcome to the site, I am enjoying looking at some of your saws, thanks for posting the pictures.

Mowbray was a registered mark of Taylor Brothers, as the etch indicates. There is a document on Wiktor\'s web site of the Taylor Brothers registered marks along with some good information on etching in general, written up by Simon Barley. Have a look at..

Taylor Brothers produced some very elaborate etchings, and the Bagshaw company made the transfers that they used.

The Disston etching is (I think) \"For Beauty Finish and Utility this saw cannot be Equalled\" , it\'s a bit more readable here
