I'm actually fairly sad to post this message, but just saw Chris Scwarz' post that Mike passed away last year in July, and Chris just found out last September. Now we know the rest of the story, heart problems. That never seems to end too well, one reason I've gone keto/carnivore. Mike taught me quite a bit about making handsaws, some of his techniques I copied, some I created my own solutions, but I would say Mike was a very clever craftsman. He had exotic wood stashed all over his house, in the attic, on top of cabinets, etc...and Dena, his wife, used the lathe a lot. Years ago, Lie Nelson used to hold Woodworking shows over at the Crucible in Oakland, and I would visit Mike and often take him out to dinner. https://blog.lostartpress.com/2025/09/22/losses-to-the-craft-mike-wenzloff-charles-hummel/ I have 3 Mike Wenzloff saws in my collection, they are pre-logo, 2 are small dovetail saws, about 8" long, 15ppi and 14ppi, one is rip and one is xcut. I also have a Harvey Peace copy that is short, only 12" long and 4" deep. I had planned and will take this down to 3" to make it more usable, but the Peace handles were really second to nobody else. I think Mike only made 2 of them, I can't remember who got the other one, but he quit making them as they were too hard to fit the handle to the plate, the blade slot ran into the handle, the entire distance from the front to rear. Originally I wanted a saw that could cut 6/4 Dovetails. I may just take the plate off, trace it, but exend it to 14" long x 3" deep. OTOH, I have saws like that already, and could make my own if I wanted, I think I should keep this 100% Wenzloff! R.I.P. my friend, I'm gonna toast one to 'ya tonight!
